The World
Trade Organization (WTO) has created new challenges before the developing
countries in all areas of economic activity. In a large country
like India, it is very important to analyse the regional implications
of these challenges as each region has its own priorities and concerns.
With this view in mind IIFT Kolkata has set up the WTO Cell for
the West Bengal. The cell is partially supported by the Government
of West Bengal. The basic infrastructure and the intellectual capital
are being provided by the IIFT Kolkata. The primary objective of
the cell is to create awareness and to disseminate information among
the policy makers and government officials on all WTO related issues.
The cell is also entrusted with the responsibility of creating suitable
databases in the identified areas of interest for domestic producers
as well as the exporters. Providing consulting and research support
to the State Government is also an important function of the Cell.
